What is intumescent paint?
Protection and Safety in Buildings
Intumescent paint represents an innovative solution in the world of construction and fire protection. Let's see an overview of what it is, its importance, applications, benefits, and tips for its application.
It is a type of coating that expands when exposed to high temperatures. This expansion forms an insulating layer that protects the materials beneath it, such as steel and wood, from the effect of fire. We look at the chemical composition of the paint and how it works to offer this crucial protection.
They play a crucial role in protecting metal structures, especially in cases where steel is a key component. These paints are essential since steel does not burn, but loses its structural strength when heated to high temperatures, especially around 550°C, a common situation in fires.
Chemical heat reaction
The Importance of Intumescent Paint in Modern Construction
The heat causes a chemical reaction and progressively alters the intumescent components, forming the protective foam whose thermal transmission has a very low coefficient, so it will become an insulator that protects the structure from heat and fire.
The use of intumescent paint is increasingly common in commercial and residential buildings. Here we will examine the vital role this paint plays in fire protection, meeting safety standards and helping to prevent serious structural damage in the event of a fire.
Applications and Benefits of Intumescent Paint
This section details the different uses of intumescent paint, including the protection of metal structures, wood, and other materials. Additional benefits such as its strength, durability and how it contributes to the overall aesthetics of buildings are also discussed.
How is intumescent paint applied?
The correct application of intumescent paint is key to its effective operation. This section provides a step-by-step guide on how to prepare the surface, apply the paint, and safety considerations to keep in mind during the process.
Why use intumescent paint?
In cellulosic fires, where the fuels are wood, paper or plastics, unprotected steel can reach 550 °C in just 17 minutes. On the other hand, steel protected with intumescent paint will take much longer to reach that critical temperature, depending on the fire stability required by the structure, this can vary between 30 and 120 minutes.
The paint is applied in a thin layer on the metal structure and expands significantly when exposed to high temperatures (generally above 250-300 °C), forming a “meringue”-like insulating layer that can be up to 100 times thicker than dry paint. This delays the heating of the steel, thus delaying the moment in which it reaches its fatigue temperature.
Components of the Anticorrosion System
The intumescent paint system includes:
- An anti-corrosion primer.
- The swelling of his own paint.
- A final layer.
In some cases, primer or topcoat may be optional.
Advantages of Intumescent Paints
Applying an intumescent paint system offers numerous advantages, including:
- Effective fire protection in metal structures.
- Anti-corrosion protection for steel.
- Optimal aesthetic finish that highlights the metal structure.
- Simple and fast maintenance.
- Limited impact on the total weight of your structure.
Application of Intumescent Paint
Intumescent paint can be applied both on site and in a workshop or factory. On-site application is often necessary depending on the complexity of the structure and the coordination of the works. On the contrary, the application in the workshop optimizes production and delivery times, providing optimal protection in a controlled environment.
The thickness of the intumescent paint layer varies depending on the product, the type of profiles, the number of exposed faces and the project, and generally ranges between 0.2 and 4 mm. Intumescent paints can be applied with conventional spray equipment, brush or roller.
